An ideal research climate – after a three-year construction period, the new institute and laboratory building for mechanical and energy engineering at the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK) was opened. During the planning phase, the aspects of thermal insulation and the use of regenerative energies were incorporated into the architecture. Heat transfer in all areas of the building is provided by column radiators and trench convectors among other things.
In addition to the use of regenerative energies – appropriate technology is installed on parts of the roof area – the energy-efficient and thus cost-effective management of the building was also paramount, without sacrificing architectural aspects. In addition to the highly thermally insulated, rear-ventilated curtain façade with brightly painted metal plates, this also includes vertically rotatable, window-high slats made of the façade material, which offer effective thermal protection against solar radiation.
